Dear Friends,
I am excited to invite you to the International Conference “Inguinal Hernia in Children - Different Techniques, One Goal. 20 years of PIRS Technique”, which will be held on October 25-26, 2024 in Wroclaw, Poland.
Inguinal hernia repair is the most common operation in pediatric surgery. Advances in surgery and anesthesiology reduced the risk of this operation to the point that it is mostly performed on an ambulatory basis as day surgery. In recent years, minimally invasive surgery has emerged with many new techniques for treating inguinal hernia. As the traditional methods of treatment are well-established and highly effective, the introduction of new techniques should at least provide benefits and offer an advantage over the old ones. But our goal is the same - to repair the hernia. Classical and laparoscopic approaches come with their own benefits and shortcomings and have advocates on both sides. We want to address all these issues in one place with the most distinguished pediatric surgeons from all over the world. Wroclaw will guarantee all the participants an unforgettable time.
This meeting is a special occasion to celebrate the 20 years of the new technique for inguinal hernia surgical treatment that was invented and developed in 2004 in Wroclaw. We named it PIRS as an acronym for Percutaneous Internal Ring Suturing. Since then, it has been widely adopted and improved by many surgeons around the world and has significantly increased the comfort of pediatric patients with inguinal hernia.
The congress will feature keynote lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and poster sessions on various topics related to inguinal hernia and pediatric surgery, such as the history and evolution of inguinal hernia repair techniques, the current best practices and guidelines, the challenges and complications of the treatment, the latest research, and innovations in the field of inguinal hernia and pediatric surgery, the future directions, and opportunities.
The conference will also provide a great opportunity to network with other experts and colleagues from different countries and regions and to exchange ideas and experiences on the clinical and academic aspects of inguinal hernia and pediatric surgery.
The event will take place in the Mercure Wrocław Centrum Hotel, near many attractions and amenities.

Andriy Dvorakevych
Pediatric surgeon specializing in endoscopic and robotic surgery, PhD. My philosophy: Victory over the illness of mother and child is the greatest reward.
I graduated from Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University in 1997 and have worked extensively in pediatric surgery. My experience includes roles at Lviv Regional Children’s Hospital "OKHMATDYT" as a surgeon and later as head of the endoscopic department and the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Since 2021, I am the head of the Surgery Center at St. Nicholas Hospital TMO #1 in Lviv and serve as deputy medical director for surgical work.
My PhD focused on minimally invasive surgical methods for inguinal hernias in children. I am involved in various professional organizations, including the All-Ukrainian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, and I am the vice-president of the Association of Robotic Surgeons of Ukraine. I have authored over 70 scientific works.
My interests include general pediatric surgery and minimally invasive and robotic surgeries for conditions like appendicitis, chest deformities, and inguinal hernias. I have trained internationally in advanced surgical techniques.
I am also active in public service, heading the medical committee of the "I am not alone" foundation and participating in the Children Medical Care Foundation (USA). I am married, have two sons, and enjoy sports and travel. I speak Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, and English.

Since 1986, after graduating from the Medical Academy (currently the Medical University) in Wrocław, I have been continuously working at the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology, where I subsequently obtained professional titles as a specialist in pediatric surgery and urology. I am a student and successor of Professor Jerzy Czernik. Since 2009, I have served as the Head of the Department and Clinic of Pediatric Surgery and Urology at the Medical University in Wrocław. In 2017, I received the title of professor from the President of the Republic of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski.

Ergun Ergün
Ergun Ergün is a pediatric surgery specialist. He currently works as a faculty member at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Surgery. His main interests are fetal/neonatal surgery, endoscopic surgery, liver transplantation and laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery. He completed his medical school and residency at the same university and has become a faculty member in 2019. He has attended an observership program in Wroclaw for three months in 2017 with Professor Dr Dariusz Patkowski. In his surgery career he has performed and supervised more than thousand laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and published many papers on this topic. He has authored more than 70 papers and more than 200 abstracts in national/international congresses.

Jerzy Gielecki
Jerzy Stanisław Gielecki, MD, PhD, DSc, is a renowned Polish anatomist and radiologist known for his contributions to medical education and research. He earned his MD in 1985, PhD in 1988, and DSc in 1999, and became a professor of medicine in 2014. Professor Gielecki has held prominent leadership roles, including head of anatomy departments at the Medical University of Silesia and the University of Warmia and Mazury. His research primarily focuses on cerebral artery development and the application of 3D visualization techniques in medical education. He has published over 90 papers and 32 books. He has developed groundbreaking tools like a glasses-free 3D holographic anatomy atlas and an Integrated Multi-modal System of 3D Modeling, which won the Gold Medal at the World Exhibition on Innovation Research and New Technologies in Brussels. His pioneering work integrating 3D visualization and immersive, interactive technologies into medical education has revolutionized teaching methods. His efforts have inspired educators globally to adopt more effective educational strategies, significantly impacting the field of medical education.

I am pediatric surgeon in Emma Children’s Hospital Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and professor in ‘Compromised gut in neonates and children’ with a special interest in translational research that is in line with my clinical expertise. I participate in several national and European consortia for patient care, research and development of guidelines (a.o. the national and European guideline on Pediatric inguinal hernia). I generated a program for one-stop-shop pediatric inguinal hernia surgery in Emma Children’s Hospital of Amsterdam UMC and created a website for children and parents/caretakers on this topic www.kinderliesbreuk.nl I am the principle investigator of two national RCTs on pediatric inguinal hernia repair (HERNIIA-1: the effectiveness of contralateral exploration and HERNIIA-2: open vs laparoscopic (PIRS) approach).

Jorge Correia Pinto
Jorge Correia-Pinto is a full professor and Dean of the Medical School at the University of Minho. He is also the Director of the Pediatric Surgery Department at the Hospital of Braga. As a pediatric surgeon, he specializes in neonatal, digestive, and pulmonary surgery, having performed over 15,000 procedures, including 750 on newborns. He pioneered the Ex Utero Intra-Partum Treatment procedure and developed a minimally invasive surgery program for newborns with congenital malformations in Portugal.
He has patented systems for correcting pectus excavatum and carinatum and supervised 30 PhD students and two Pediatric Surgery Residents. With over 250 scientific articles published and several patents co-authored, one was recently licensed to a multinational company. He is a faculty member at IRCAD-Surgical Training Centers and the University of Bologna's Master in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Pediatric Surgery. As the global coordinator of the 'Hands-on courses in minimally invasive surgery' program at the University of Minho, he trains over 500 surgeons annually.

Born in Catania (Italy) in June, 29<sup>th</sup> 1955. He is a Full Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Bologna and Director of the Pediatric Surgery Unit at the “Policlinico S.Orsola” hospital and at the “Ospedale Maggiore” of Bologna. He is Director of the Graduate School for Pediatric Surgery at the University of Bologna. He is the author of 860 scientific publications, 41 monographs. He performed almost 7000 surgical procedures as first operator. He is known internationally for the use of mini-invasive techniques in thorax, abdominal, genital and urinary surgery in neonates and children.
From November 2007 to November 2010 he was vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Bologna.
He has been Director of the integrated Department of children, adolescences and women’s health of the “Policlinico S. Orsola” from November, 1<sup>st</sup> 2010 to July 2014.
He was the past President of the Medical and Surgical Society of Bologna.

Senior Consultant in Pediatric Surgery and Urology at the National Service of Pediatric Surgery, Children’s Clinic, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg. He completed a General Surgery Residency at the University of Liege, Belgium (1983-1989), followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, USA (1989-1991). He holds a special competency in Pediatric Surgery from the Belgian Association of Specialist Medical Doctors (1994) and a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Pediatric Surgery from the European Board of Pediatric Surgery (1997).
He is a former Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at KannerKlinik, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg. His areas of interest include minimally invasive pediatric urology, general surgery, thoracoscopic surgery, and neonatal surgery. He is a Foreign Honorary Member of the Académie Nationale de Chirurgie (Paris) and has been involved with various professional organizations, including EUPSA, SFCP, IPEG, and the Société Luxembourgeoise de Pédiatrie.
He has been a faculty member at the Laparoscopy Training Center IRCAD in Strasbourg, Taiwan, and Brazil since 1994, and teaches in the Master in Minimally Invasive Paediatric Surgery program at the University of Bologna. He also participates in courses on fetal and neonatal endoscopic surgery at the University of Minho, Portugal.
He has published 50 journal articles and contributed to over 100 presentations and 22 posters at peer-reviewed congresses. He graduated with honors (Magnum cum Laude) from the University of Liege in Belgium in 1983.

Todd Ponsky
Todd Ponsky is currently serving as Chief Innovation Officer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He is also a Professor of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati and a pediatric surgeon at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His surgical career has focused on developing and popularizing minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as needlescopic surgery in newborns and the pediatric laparoscopic hernia repair, while also spearheading advancements in surgical telepresence. Todd is an accomplished author, writer, and speaker publishing more than 140 manuscripts, authored three textbooks and more than 30 book chapters, led over 50 national and international courses and given over 230 invited lectureships on minimally invasive surgical techniques in children as well as the convergence of innovation and education.
Before joining Cincinnati Children’s in 2018, Todd launched and served as CEO of a startup, GlobalcastMD. One of its platforms, StayCurrentMD, has significantly improved the dissemination of medical knowledge.
Todd earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1999, completed his surgical residency at George Washington University in 2005, and his pediatric surgical training at Children’s National Hospital in 2007.
Reflecting his commitment to innovative thought leadership, he served as the recent past president of International Pediatric Endosurgical Group, the premier international pediatric surgical society, advocating for breakthrough techniques. In 2023, he was honored to be inducted as a member of the American Surgical Association. As a board member of the International Society for Pediatric Innovation, he continues to prioritize advances in the pediatric innovation ecosystem.
The real focus of his life are his wife, Diana, and three daughters, Sasha, Josie and Ella.

For your convenience, we have also provided an approximate equivalent in Euros (EUR), calculated based on the exchange rate as of January 6, 2024. Please keep in mind that these Euro values are estimated and may slightly vary depending on the current exchange rate at the time of your payment. After positive verification with the Supreme Chamber of Physicians, a registration form will appear.
